Hi!
How to Baby comes out next Tuesday. We’re having a book launch on Friday evening at 7 in Brooklyn to make it easier for parents to come (as if! I️ mean please do!). We’ll be serving matzah and wine instead of our usual Friday night book launch challah and grape juice. I️ totally mean it (if I️ can get to a store before then).
Having a book out involves a lot of feelings. In my case, always a feeling of not doing enough to help it out into the world, and not knowing what enough would even look like. A love of the work I️ get to do, a disbelief over my luck to get to make books, a fear that I’ll lose my luck. A reckoning, always.
The main feeling, though, the one I️ take too much for granted, is delight. In this book’s case: awe over the incredible thoughtfulness and talent my editors (Whitney Frick, Andy Ward) have poured into this book, and the mindblowingly good craftsmanship that got put into design, cover, printing, color - it’s a perfect object.
I’m really excited to have this book out in the world.
Here’s an excerpt that was published online in The beloved, wonderful New Yorker (thanks Emma Allen, thanks Rachel Pearlman, thanks David Remnick) yesterday.
For paid subscribers - a comic I️ made last month. I’ve been going through some intense—common, fine, but intense—things lately and have been writing from the perspective of a slightly different person - more feral, rough, fearful, emotional than usual (and my usual isn’t exactly Montaigne). It’s been fun to document it, if possibly an itchy reading experience. Sorry! And back to our usual programming soon, I️ do hope.
